Julian, Shields Selected For World Short-Course Team

Oct 28, 2021
Trenton Julian is one of two Golden Bears who were named to USA Swimming's 2021 FINA Short-Course World Championships roster.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – California fifth-year Trenton Julian and alumnus Tom Shields were selected to represent Team USA at the 2021 FINA Short-Course World Championships, USA Swimming announced on Thursday.

Julian will swim the 200-meter butterfly and Shields will swim the 50m and 100m butterfly events. The championships, which are contested in a 25-meter pool rather than a 50-meter pool used at the Olympics and other international competitions, are scheduled for Dec. 16-21 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Julian is back in Bear Territory for a fifth collegiate season in 2021-22 after utilizing the NCAA's waiver for an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Glendale, California, native is coming off of a successful year in which he scored 48 points at the NCAA Championships in March before narrowly missing a spot on the U.S. Olympic roster with fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the 100m fly and 200m fly at the U.S. Olympic Trials. He was named to his third consecutive USA Swimming National Team in September.

Shields qualified for his second Olympics this past summer and went on to help Team USA win Olympic gold as part of the 4x100m medley relay, swimming the 100m butterfly during preliminaries. The 11-time USA Swimming National Team member has stayed busy since, leading the LA Current into the International Swimming League (ISL) playoffs as well as setting an American record in the short-course 50m fly (21.99) at the second stop on the 2021 FINA World Cup circuit in Budapest, Hungary in early October.
