Triathlon Announces National Championship Team
TEMPE -- On Thursday morning Sun Devil Triathlon announced its official seven women roster for the 2021 National Championships hosted at Tempe Town Lake North Park on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.
The roster is composed of the 2019 individual National Champion Kyla Roy and two-time National Champion Hannah Henry, seniors Kira Stanley and Audrey Ernst, junior Liberty Ricca and sophomore Amber Schlebusch. Rounding out the group is freshman Canadian Alexe Coursol with fellow first year Camille Buchanan as the alternate for Saturday's events.
"After having our season cancelled in 2020 due Covid-19 we're thrilled as a team to be back to racing and having a season now in 2021. We certainly recognize that this time has been hard on our friends, families and humanity in general, but we're humbled and grateful to be here at Arizona State in the United States enjoying our health and all the privileges we have," head coach Cliff English said. "We celebrate the opportunity to race again in the NCAA collegiate national championships and vow to seize this moment and make the most of it. We are ready and hungry to compete for the title."
Prior to the pandemic and sport stoppage, the Sun Devils won four-straight national titles as a program.
Roy placed first individually in 2019, finishing with a total time of 1:05:22. Ernst followed Roy the entire race as she claimed silver with a time of 1:05:52. Ricca earned sixth place (1:08:17) and Stanley rounded out the team at 16th.
The 2021 collegiate National Championships will begin at 11:30 a.m. (MST) with the DIII Championships after the community events for the 2021 Sun Devil Draft Legal Classic presented by Valley Toyota Dealers.
The DII Championships will begin at 1:15 p.m., followed by the DI race at 3 pm. Women's Collegiate Nationals Awards will conclude the day's events at 4:30 pm.
