Wong Reaches Wins No. 100

Nov 6, 2021

SEATTLE – Fifth-year Husky Vanessa Wong achieved something only done by three other players in the history of Washington Women's Tennis today, as she reached 100 career singles wins with a victory in the quarterfinals of the Jack Kramer Invitational. Wong, the Toronto native, tied Dea Sumantri for third-most wins in school history.

Wong defeated Pepperdine's Nikki Redelijk, 7-5, 6-3, to make the semis at the Jack Kramer Club this afternoon for her seventh win of the fall and 100th of her career. She and Sumantri (2002-05) are now tied for third, just one win behind Venise Chan (2008-11) for second on the career wins list. Kristina Kraszewski (1998-01) has the record with 111 singles wins.

Ranked a career-high 14th nationally to start the fall, Wong now has a career singles record of 100-30 for a .769 win percentage that ranks as the best among the four players to reach 100 career wins.

Wong also teamed with Astrid Olsen to win twice in the Jack Kramer doubles draw and make the final. The pair defeated Arizona's Wilkins and Fry, 8-6, in the quarters and then topped Iamachkine/Redelijk of Pepperdine, 9-7, in the semis.

Three more Huskies were in the singles quarters today, but all fell short in close matches with the Waves. Olsen lost to 59th-ranked Shiori Fukuda, 6-4, 6-3. Sarah-Maude Fortin dropped a 7-5, 6-1 match to Savannah Broadus, and Nika Zupancic won her first set, 7-5, but dropped the next two, 2-6, 3-6, to Anastasia Iamachkine.

Gonzaga Invitational

Over in Spokane, two Huskies moved into the singles finals of their flights at the Gonzaga Invitational at the Stevens Center.

Sophomore Yolanda Lin won twice today over opponents from Portland and Montana State to reach the Red Draw final. Zoey Weil, the top seed in her Purple Draw, also won twice, beating Oregon's Allison Mulville, 6-2, 6-3, and then Katherine Jhang of Idaho, 6-1, 6-2.

Tara Chilton came up a couple points short of joining Weil in the Purple final. She beat Idaho State's Sol O'Lideadha losing just two games in the quarters, but lost a super-tiebreak to Kianna Oda of Gonzaga in the semis, 10-8.
