Cal Falls To No. 13 UW

Nov 14, 2021

BERKELEY – California came up short against No. 13 Washington, falling in straight sets 16-25, 16-25, 20-25 Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

Leah Schmidt led the Bears with nine kills and Lydia Grote added seven for the Bears (7-20, 0-16 Pac-12).

Shannon Crenshaw tallied a match-high 13 kills for Washington (20-4, 13-3 Pac-12).

How It Happened:
After a back-and-forth start to the first, UW used a 7-0 run to go up 15-4. The Bears scored three of the next four points to close within nine, but that was as close as it would get as the Huskies went on to a 25-16 win in the first frame.

Cal fought back in the second set, turning a seven-point deficit into a 14-10 game behind kills from Grote and Sam Taumoepeau. The conference-leading Huskies used another run to take a 19-11 advantage before finishes from Schmidt and Tamoepeau.
Once again, however, UW scored the final four points to take the set, 25-16.

Cal led throughout the first nine points in the third, thanks to a trio of kills from Bella Bergmark. The Huskies used a run once more, scoring six of eight points to go up 15-11 and Cal couldn't get closer than three down the stretch.

Up Next: The Bears travel to Utah for a 4 p.m. PT first serve against the Utes on Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Huntsman Center.
