Team Black Carries the Night at Orange & Black Exhibition

Nov 19, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State gymnastics team hosted its annual Orange & Black Exhibition Friday evening at Gill Coliseum. For the first time since March 24, 2020 the Beavers were able to perform in front of several hundred fans as Beaver Nation got a first glimpse of the 2022 gymnastics team.

The exhibition featured pairings of head-to-head matchups on each event. The crowd and guest judges then decided which had performed the best routine by indicating the winner with an orange and black card.

The annual meet is a free event for fans providing the first public look at the 2022 Beavers at Gill Coliseum. The meet ended with freshman Jade Carey performing her Olympic Gold Medal floor routine in front of Beaver Nation.

For those keeping score, Team Black defeated Team Orange 10-6 including Carey recording wins on three events that were scored for Team Black. Junior Jenna Domingo, freshman Kaitlin Garcia, senior Kaitlyn Yanish, and sophomore Ariana Young led their respective squads with two wins apiece.

Junior Kayla Bird, Carey, senior Madi Dagen, and Garcia performed in the all-around while sophomore Sydney Gonzales and freshman Lauren Letzsch appeared on three events.

Among the guest judges were current Oregon State student-athletes Sofiane Djeffal (men's soccer), Dyshawn Hobson (men's basketball), Ethan dBarja (men's rowing), Noelle Mannen (women's basketball) and Madeline Toaso (women's rowing) along with former Oregon State gymnasts Isis Lowery, Lena Greene and Destinee Davis. Additional judges included Ron Callan from Beaver Sports Network, AJ McCord from KOIN News, Andrew Haubner of KEZI and Oregon State's digital host and social + coordinator, Hadley Heck.

The Beavers' season opens Jan. 8 when they travel to Anaheim, Calif. to participate in the prestigious 2022 Collegiate Challenge, hosted by Olympic Gold Medalist Amanda Borden. The only podium competition on the west coast features six top gymnastics programs and league competitors including Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Oregon State, UCLA and Washington.
