Cal Drops Road Contest At Utah

Dec 5, 2021
Grant Anticevich recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds in Cal's 66-58 loss at Utah on Sunday.

SALT LAKE CITY, UtahGrant Anticevich tallied his second double-double of the season but California fell short in a 66-58 Pac-12 loss at Utah on Sunday afternoon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

Anticevich (12 points, 10 rebounds) was one of three Golden Bears with double figures in scoring, along with Jordan Shepherd (14) and Makale Foreman (season-high 13). The Bears held an early advantage, leading 35-29 at halftime after shooting 50 percent in the first half. A 10-0 run by Utah opened the second half, however, and Cal trailed for the final 18 minutes of the contest.

Cal dropped to 4-5 (1-1 Pac-12) with the loss while Utah improved to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After shooting 1-10 from the field through the first six-plus minutes of the game, Cal flipped the script and exploded to make 14 of its final 20 shots, including 4-5 from three-point range, before halftime. The outburst was paced by Foreman who scored all 13 of his points on 5-6 shooting and 3-4 from behind the arc in the first half.

The Runnin' Utes pulled ahead 39-35 with their 10-run over the first four minutes of the second half before a layup by Lars Thiemann snapped Cal's scoring drought with 15:14 remaining. A jumper from Anticevich with 9:11 to go pulled Cal within three points, 50-47, before the Utes reeled off five straight of their own. Shepherd netted a second-chance layup to make it 58-54 with 4:45 left in the contest, but Cal was held without a field goal the rest of the way.

The Bears held Utah to 38.3 percent shooting (23-60) in the game. Both teams were even at 39 in the rebounding battle.

Cal was without Kuany Kuany for the majority of the game after he was injured with 13:45 remaining in the first half.

Cal returns to non-conference play and opens a four-game homestand against Idaho State at 7 p.m. PT Wednesday, Dec. 8 in Berkeley. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
