Three Bruins Earn AVCA Pacific South All-Region Plaudits

Dec 7, 2021

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Mac May and Zoe Fleck were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Pacific South All-Region Team, the organization announced Tuesday morning. Shelby Martin was selected AVCA Pacific South All-Region Honorable Mention.

May, the Pac-12 Player of the Year, and Fleck, the Pac-12 Libero of the Year, were also awarded to the All-Pac-12 Team on Nov. 29. Martin earned All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention honors as well.

This is May's third consecutive AVCA All-Region Team honor in addition to her AVCA All-Region Honorable Mention plaudit in 2018. Fleck was AVCA All-Region her first season as a Bruin in Spring 2021.

May, a graduate outside hitter from Dubuque, Iowa, has season-high of 541 kills and 44 service aces so far in Fall 2021 (through Dec. 4). Her 4.81 kills per set rank 10th in the country. May leads the Pac-12 with 12 20-kill performances. With her 25 kills and three aces against UCF last Saturday, Mac May climbed into both the top 3 on UCLA's career kills list (2,048) and career aces list (177). She is the only Bruin in program history to crack the top 3 in both statistical categories. May surpassed Liz Masakayan (pronounced Mass-uh-KY-un, 1982-85) for sole possession of third place on the kill leader board and is tied for third in career aces with Merja Connolly (1981-84). May recorded her 2,000th career kill in a 27-point performance (21 kills, 3 aces) at USC on Nov. 26, becoming the fourth Bruin in program history and first since the beginning of the rally scoring era (2001-present) to achieve the feat. May is UCLA's all-time leader with 507 sets played.

Fleck, a senior defensive specialist/libero from Granada Hills, Calif., leads UCLA with 452 digs, averaging 4.00 digs per set. She was a two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award winner this season on Oct. 11 and Nov. 1. Fleck has recorded double-figure digs in 28 of 30 matches this season, and has led the Bruins in digs in 27 matches. She has five 20-dig performances, including a UCLA-career-high 29 digs versus UCF last Saturday, Dec. 4 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Martin, a setter from Waxahachie, Texas, ranks third in the Pac-12 with 10.57 assists per set and has averaged 2.07 digs per set. Martin has recorded four 50-assist performances this season and has tallied 54 kills at a .326 hitting percentage.
