Four Bears Set For Short-Course World Championships

Dec 15, 2021
Hugo González, one of four Bears competing at the 2021 FINA Short-Course World Championships, is entered in six events.

BERKELEY – Four current or former members of the California men's swimming & diving program will represent their countries at the 2021 FINA Short-Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Dec. 16-21.

Redshirt senior Hugo González (Spain), fifth-year senior Trenton Julian (USA), freshman Ziyad Saleem (Sudan) and alumnus Tom Shields (USA) will compete across the six-day meet at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. González has the busiest week of the quartet, as he's entered in six total events. Saleem is entered in both the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events while Julian and Shields will swim in one individual event apiece.

Both González and Julian did not compete with their collegiate teammates at the Minnesota Invite earlier this month as they continued their respective training plans ahead of the short-course world championships. Saleem most recently placed 12th (1:44.59) and 22nd (48.41) in the 200- and 100-yard backstroke events at the Minnesota Invite. Shields recently wrapped up the 2021 International Swimming League season, helping the LA Current reach the championship match and place fourth overall.

With Abu Dhabi 12 hours ahead of Pacific Time, preliminary sessions will begin at 9:30 p.m. PT (the previous night), followed by finals at 6 a.m. PT. Finals sessions will be available to stream on the Olympic Channel (via NBC Sports). Live results are available via Omega Timing.

The championships are contested in a 25-meter pool rather than a 50-meter pool used at the Olympics and other international competitions.
