Doan Leads NCAA Rookie Scoring with Goal in Hockey's Loss

Jan 8, 2022

BOSTON – Despite goals from Tim Theocharidis and Josh Doan, the Arizona State men's ice hockey team was tripped up by Boston University on Saturday night. With his seventh goal of the season, Doan's 22 points on the season leads all NCAA freshmen in scoring. Sun Devil Hockey scheduled a quick turnaround and faces No. 11 Northeastern on Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Matthews Arena.

ASU (12-12-0) and BU (9-9-3) tied for shots on goal at 38 each while starting goaltender Ben Kraws made 33 saves, his fifth time this season making 30+ saves.

Graduate defenseman Tim Theocharidis scored ASU's opening goal mid-way through the third period. Linemate forwards Colin Theisen and Josh Doan assisted d-man Theocharidis on his goal from the blue line. Theo masterfully drove the puck through traffic as a screen by freshman Jack Jensen helped stymie the BU netminder.

ASU saw a huge opportunity late in the third with two back-to-back BU penalties giving ASU a 5-on-3 power play, but ultimately couldn't capitalize.

Several minutes later, Doan, who earlier tallied an assist, notched a goal of his own. With assists from Theoharidis and Jensen, Doan collected the seventh goal of his collegiate career to lead all NCAA freshmen in scoring with 22 total points.

SERIES NOTES

  • ASU has notched over 35 shots on net in eight of the team's 24 games so far this season. Six of those games resulted in wins for the Sun Devils.
  • ASU kept it tight on the penalties - only called to the box twice on Saturday night and three times on Friday. The five total over the weekend are the second-fewest ASU has endured over a series this season. The least was three last weekend in the sweep over then-No. 9 Cornell.
  • ASU's one goal on Friday night is tied for fewest in a game this season for the Sun Devils with the 1-7 loss on Dec. 4 to No. 12 Denver
  • Doan's 22 points (7G, 15A) on the season leads all NCAA freshmen in scoring.
