Bears Romp Through Saturday At Winter Invite
BERKELEY – Cal women's tennis did not lose a set on Saturday as the Golden Bears continued to dominate the annual Cal Winter Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.
Cal won all four of its doubles matches in the morning and swept its eight singles matches in the afternoon.
The Bears' Haley Giavara improved to 2-0 at court-one singles, defeating Santa Clara's Finley Kalinic, 6-3, 7-5. The pair of Giavara and Valentina Ivanov also improved to 2-0 at court-one doubles, with the two juniors beating Cal Poly's Emily Ackerman and Kim Bhunu, 8-4.
Saturday's format was different than Friday's at the Cal Winter Invitational, with teams starting with doubles play first and then playing singles in the afternoon under a partly cloudy sky in Berkeley.
"It was good to get a little closer to how it's going to look once we start dual-match play," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We did a good job of today of staying focused in the doubles. We played opponents who played quite aggressively, and we adjusted well. That carried over into the singles, and we didn't lose a set in singles."
The Cal Winter Invitational will conclude on Sunday, with matches starting at 10 a.m.
