Last Tune-Ups in the Books

LAS VEGAS/SAN DIEGO - Stanford competed in its final tune-up tournaments before the start of the spring, dual match season over the weekend, highlighted by a run to the championship match in doubles at the Freeman Memorial and four ranked wins at the Torero Tennis Classic.

Angelica Blake and Connie Ma, the nation's No. 38 ranked doubles pair won three matches to earn a runners-up finish in Las Vegas, defeating teams from Oklahoma State, UNLV and a ranked duo from Pepperdine.

In singles, No. 9 Ma and Ana Geller both won their first round matches, including a three-set win over No. 30 Victoria Flores from Pepperdine for Geller, but Stanford was dispatched in singles in the round of 16. Blake picked up two singles victories herself in added matches, defeating No. 87 Emma Shelton of Florida on Saturday and No. 36 Savannah Broadus of Pepperdine on Sunday.

In San Diego, freshman Valencia Xu and sophomore India Houghton both finished with perfect records in singles play, including two ranked victories for Xu. No. 21 Alexandra Yepifanova won two of her three matches in singles, all against ranked opponents as well, while Sara Choy picked up another singles victory for the Cardinal.

Stanford opens dual match play on Thursday, Jan. 20, hosting UC Davis at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
