Cardinal Downs Devils

STANFORD, Calif. - The Cardinal took down the Sun Devils on Friday afternoon by a score of 184 to 93 in the Avery Aquatic Center. Stanford claimed 11 event wins on the way to the team victory.

The meet started in favor of Stanford, with an event win in the 200-yard medley relay. Leon MacAlister, Ron Polonsky, Andrei Minakov, and Mason Gonzalez combined for a time of 1:25.72 and the first-place finish.

Grant Shoults continued his dominance in the long distance events, notching another win in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:09.13. The fifth-year swimmer also claimed second place in the 500-yard free later in the meet.

Andrew Matejka performed well in the long distance events too, grabbing third in the 1000 with a time of 9:16.84. The junior swimmer also finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:31.73.

Preston Forst narrowly took second place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:34.70, but the super sophomore came back to win the 500-yard free, beating out Shoults by 0.02 with a time of 4:21.08.

Leon MacAlister once again flexed his strength in the backstroke, nabbing a first place finish in the 100-yard backstrokee with a time of 46.64. Later in the meet, he finished second in the 200-yard backstroke by 0.1 seconds and with a time of 1:43.24.

Ethan Dang, Jon Cook, and Daniel Roy dominated the breastroke events throughout the entire meet. The trio claimed the top-three spots in the 100-yard and 200-yard breastroke, with Ethan Dang taking the top spot in the 100 with a time of 53.68. Daniel Royearned first in the 200-yard event, finishing with a time of 1:56.89.

Andrei Minakov continued to show his dominance in the freestyle, taking first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.59. The freshman Olympian also took first place in the 100-yard freestyle, notching a time of 43.29.

The Cardinal swept the 100-yard fly as Aaron Sequeira set a personal best and took first place with a 47.24. Ethan Hu and Jonny Affeld took second and third in the event.

The meet finished with a narrow second place finish for Stanford in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Cardinal team of Leon MacAlister, Preston Forst, Jonny Affeld, and Andrei Minakov finished iwht a time of 2:54.09, just behind the Arizona State time of 2:53.84.

Stanford is back in action to face Arizona on Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Avery Aquatic Center.
