Four Devils Set for International Action

TEMPE - Sun Devil Wrestling will be heavily represented on the international stage in the upcoming weeks as Cohlton Schultz, Anthony Valencia, and Zahid Valencia all prepare for tournaments. Schultz (130 kg) is one of nine U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers set to compete at the Grand Prix of Zagreb in Croatia from Jan. 29-30. Program standout Zahid Valencia and Josh Shields will both compete for the U.S. at the Ivan Yariguin Grand Prix in Russia, and Zahid is also set for the U.S. men's freestyle team at Bout at the Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, on Feb. 12. Anthony Valencia continues his journey to the Mexican National Team Friday, Jan. 28 at the Selectivo Nacionql Clasificatorio, or, Mexico World Team Trials. The Trials run Jan. 27-20 in Guadalajara, Mexico.
 
Schultz: For the Grand Prix, qualification and elimination rounds are set for Jan. 29 with the repechage and finals happening the following day. He'll be joined on this trip with G'Angelo Hancock who wrestles for ASU's sister RTC, Sunkist. Hancock earned a bronze medal at the Senior World Championships in Oslo, Norway last October.
 
Schultz has an 11-0 record this season, is ranked third in the country, and is currently on a three-match major decision winning streak. In international competition, Schultz has a 2017 Cadet World gold medal and a silver and a bronze from the Junior World Championships. He last wrestled at the Senior World Championships in Oslo, Norway in October 2021where he lost, 5-3, in the opening round to Iakobi Kajaia (Georgia).

Anthony: Anthony announced on December 10 his desire to wrestle for his family's native country of Mexico. His first tournament en route to donning the Mexican singlet was the National Grand Prix where he took gold at 74 kg. A win at this upcoming tournament would secure Valencia's spot on the senior roster.
 
Anthony is 13-1 on the season and 113-27 in his collegiate career. He has five pins, a tech, and one major decision this year.

Zahid: Zahid's matches in February will be part of an exhibition dual between the U.S. and Iran, which will take place simultaneously with an NCAA dual between Oklahoma State and Iowa State. This marks the first time a senior-level international meet and an NCAA meet will operate like this.
 
Zahid, who is No. 8 in the UWW rankings, last competed internationally at the Poland Open in July where he took gold at 86kg. In 2019, Valencia was a Seniors Nationals champion, in 2018 he finished second at the Final X and won a silver medal at the 2017 Junior World Championships. Throughout his time as a Sun Devil from 2015 to 2020, he won two NCAA titles and was named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year in 2019. He heads to Arlington alongside five-time World champion and fellow Sunkist wrestler Jordan Burroughs (79kg) .
 
The Oklahoma State-Iowa collegiate meet and the United States-Iran exhibition meet will take place simultaneously beginning at 6:30 p.m. on February 12 with bouts from the two competitions alternating throughout the event on two different mats.
