Ducks Drop ITA Kickoff Finale

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Sophie Luescher picked up her first career ranked singles victory, beating the No. 43 player in the nation but Oregon couldn't dig out of an early hole in a 4-1 loss to Charlotte Saturday at the ITA Kickoff.
 
How it Happened: The Ducks dropped the doubles point for the second straight match, losing at the No. 1 and 3 spots to go down 1-0. After Allison Mulville and Lillian Mould dropped their match at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, UO had a chance to clinch the opening point with 5-4 leads and match point opportunities at both the No. 2 and 3 spots. Charlotte would save match point at both spots and the pair of Safont/Petruzelova would go on to top Myah Petchey and Ares Teixido Garcia, 7-5.
 
Luescher put the Ducks on the board with her win at the No. 1 spot, rolling to an opening set win before erasing a 4-1 deficit in the second to finish off a 6-2, 6-4 sweep. Teixido Garcia was up 3-6, 6-2, 3-1 when her match was halted while freshman Karin Young came back from down 4-1 to win her opening set, 7-5, at the No. 5 spot in an unfinished match.
 
Mould fell at No. 3, 6-3, 6-0 while Misaki Kobayashi lost 6-1, 7-5 despite coming back from down 3-1 to take a 5-4 lead in the second before dropping the last three games. Petchey battled but came up short in a 6-4, 6-3 loss at the No. 2 spot to give Charlotte the clincher.
