Huskies Handle Vandals, 6-1

Jan 30, 2022

SEATTLE – Washington men's tennis ran its record to 6-0 today, its best start to a season since 2011, with a 6-1 victory over Idaho at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies swept the doubles point and had five straight-set victories in singles play.

"We're happy to be 6-0," said Head Coach Matt Anger. "We haven't been 6-0 since 2011, so we like that. We've been fairly consistent. Our doubles play has definitely gotten sharper, we're giving away fewer and fewer points. And I think the singles has been very consistent. These matches have been very good for us to stay in match play form, and hopefully we continue to build and get better as we go."

The Huskies started quickly in doubles. Freshman Cesar Bouchelaghem and senior Ewen Lumsden combined for a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and then Jack Pulliam and Han-Chih Lin finished a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Jack Davis and Brandon Wong won 6-2 at No. 1 over Casino/Bascon to finish the point.

The Huskies took all six first sets in singles and rolled on to the win. Davis was first to finish off a 6-1, 6-3 win over Matteo Masala at second singles. Then third-ranked Clement Chidekh defeated Bruno Casino, 6-3, 6-0. Bouchelaghem clinched in his second career singles match, beating Vivek Ramesh, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.

Lumsden notched a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Mario Duron Garza, and Pulliam made it 6-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 against Alex Asenov. The Vandals got the last match, with Lin falling in a third set super-tiebreak, 7-10, to Alejandro Salvador Civera.

Next week the Huskies host San Diego State in a match moved from Feb. 4 to Sunday, Feb. 6.
