Dueling at the Duals
EVANSTON, Ill. – Noah Matricciani helped the Stanford men's saber team to a 4-1 record on the first day of the two-day NU Winter Duals at Northwestern University to highlight Cardinal performances Saturday.
The No. 12 Cardinal men's fencers went 2-3 and the No. 12 Stanford women went 1-4. All the losses for both were to top-10 teams, at Ryan Field House.
The Stanford men (6-7 overall this season) beat Wayne State, 23-4, and Cleveland State, 16-11. Losses were to No. 1 Notre Dame, 19-8, No. 4 Ohio State, 16-11, and No. 9 North Carolina, 16-11.
The Cardinal women (8-6) beat Boston College, 16-11. Losses were to No. 2 Notre Dame, 19-8, No. 4 Cornell, 20-7, No. 6 Ohio State, 16-11, and No. 9 Temple, 17-10.
Matricciani went 10-2, including 7-2 against ranked opponents Notre Dame, Ohio State, and North Carolina.
Against Notre Dame, fifth-year senior Lucas Orts and freshman Draper Dayton pulled off the most impressive victories of the day for the Cardinal, both in foil. Orts beat defending NCAA champ Marcello Olivares, 5-2, and Dayton beat 2021 NCAA runner-up Andrew Machovec, 5-4. Orts and Dayton each went 2-1 against the Irish, as did freshman Kai Rayle in epee.
Orts went 9-4 throughout the day and Robin Cheong was 7-5 in epee. Orts is 28-9 (.757) this season, including a 19-5 record at the Western Invitational in November.
For the women, sophomore Haley Koo went 10-5, earning a pair of victories against Notre Dame, as did foil teammate Madeline Liao. Koo also went 2-1 against Cornell and Temple, with Irene Yeu (epee) going 3-0 against Ohio State and 9-6 overall.
