Nineteen Goals Fuel Water Polo Past CSUEB

TEMPE, Ariz. – To open day one of the ASU Invitational at Mona Plummer, No. 9 Sun Devil Water Polo defeated California State East Bay 19-10, which is the most goals at home since February 2021 when the team scored 23 goals against California Baptist. 

In the all-around win, ASU had nine different scorers, and among those four of them had multi-goal games including: Luca Petovary, Amira Van Buren, Borbala Kekesi, and Abby Begg.

"It's a good chance for us to continue to get better and continue to work on things." Said Head Coach Todd Clapper who noted the importance of today's win. "It's really good to see the evolution of our game."

Among the multi-goal scorers, Luca Petovary led the way offensively for ASU with five goals and two assists, which was good for seven points on the day. McDowell and Kekesi each had four points and had five steals between the two of them.


The entire active roster saw time in the pool today, including all three goalies. 


The game started off relatively slow, and was knotted at three apiece at the end of the third quarter. It was an all-Hungarian effort from ASU after one with goals from Baksa, Kekesi, and Petovary in that frame.

With a 7-0 run in the second quarter, the Sun Devils were able to take the large lead into the half. The Pioneers stayed off of the board in the second thanks to Baksa and the Sun Devil defense, which tallied 1o steals on the day

Marie Rudasics replaced Baca in net to start the third, while ASU was 3-3 on opening sprints, and capitalized on their opening possession in the third quarter with a goal from Amira Van Buren.and the Sun Devil offense helped her out with four more goals to the Pioneers' 3.

In the fourth, Molly Ostrowski entered at goalie and gave up four goals to CSUEB, but offensively ASU put five on the board to secure the 19 goal victory at home.
