Colorado Secures First Win Against Gonzaga

Feb 13, 2022

BOULDER – Colorado women's tennis won its first match of the season here Sunday after defeating Gonzaga 5-2.

The Buffaloes (1-3) took the first four points and clinched the match before Gonzaga (2-3) was able to pick up a point.

Caroline Pozo and Maria Campos led the way for Colorado with a double point clinching win and a pair of singles victories. The duo took down Cate Broerman and Adrianna Sosnowska 6-4 in the No.1 doubles match after Betina Tokac and Ellen Puzak picked up the win in the No.3 doubles match. Unfortunately, the No.2 doubles duo of Ky Ecton and Mila Stanojevic lost 7-5 just seconds before the No.1 team clinched the point.

Moving to singles, Pozo defeated Broerman in the No.1 singles match with a pair of 6-3 sets after Campos made easy work of Federikke Svarre 6-1, 6-2.

The match-clinching point came from Stanojevic in the No.2 singles match. The freshman picked up her 12th-straight win after trading 6-2 sets with Sosnowska. The pair battled to 5-5 in the third set before Stanojevic captured the next two games to win 7-5.

With the match decided, Gonzaga made up some ground with wins in the No.4 and No.5 singles matches. Tokac fell in the first set 6-1, then was up 5-1 in the second before Jenna Sloan stormed back to take a 6-5 lead. Tokac forced a tiebreaker where she had another 5-1 lead but ended up falling 9-7. Ecton fell in the No.5 match to Kianna Oda 6-4, 6-3.

The final match of the day had Puzak against Aitken. Puzak won the first 6-4 then fell in the second 6-3. She burst out to a quick 8-3 lead in the third set tiebreak, ultimately winning 10-4.

The Buffaloes head to Portland next weekend to take on Portland State and the University of Portland.

On The Win
It's good for the team. Like I said yesterday, we feel like we are making some good progress. It's nice for the team, for them to win a match and have that progress be validated in a more tangible way. From yesterday when we played Baylor to today I thought the team got better with really good energy. Obviously, we've been dealing with some adversity. Hopefully we can keep building going on this.

On Maria and Caroline
I'm glad that they won, but once again, we're happy wherever we can get four points from. Today we got five so at the end the day wherever we can get four from, we're happy. Nice job by Caroline and Maria, and Mila who is a freshmen, clinching the match for the first time. It was good environment. It was tough, Gonzaga's a good team. Happy with the result and excited to get ready for next week.
