San Diego Tops Cougars, 4-1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Washington State Women's Tennis captured the opening doubles point but could not capitalize in singles play as the Cougars were defeated by San Diego, 4-1, Saturday morning at the Arnhold Tennis Center.
 
The Cougars (4-4) opened the day by winning at No. 1 and 3 doubles over San Diego (5-1) to take the opening point. At No 1, WSU's Michaela Bayerlova and Maxine Murphy came away with a 6-4 win over Solymar Colling and Elizabeth Goldsmith while Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Elyse Tse escaped with a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Claudia De Las Heras and Victoria Kalaitzis. At No. 2, USD's Abigail Desiatnikov and Jordyn McBride were leading Fifa Kumhom and Yang Lee 5-4 when their match was stopped.
 
In singles play, the Toreros posted straight-set wins in four matches to clinch the team victory. Desiatnikov defeated Ly-Nguyen 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 while Goldsmith cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Murphy at No. 3.
 
At No. 5, De Las Heras defeated Hania Abouelsaad 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 while Kalaitzis defeated Lee, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6.
 
With the team outcome determined, the remaining two matches were stopped. At No. 1, Bayerlova was on serve with Colling in the third, 6-3, 1-6, 0-1, while Kumhom was trailing McBride 5-7, 2-3.
 
WSU is next in action Saturday against Iowa State in New York.
