Schultz Clinches Senior Day Victory Against Lehigh

Feb 19, 2022

TEMPE - Sun Devil Wrestling's 21-17 victory over Lehigh was an absolute thriller start-to-finish Saturday afternoon. ASU's win was highlighted by three major decisions and six-periods at the heavyweight class and capped off the regular season with a home victory. Brandon Courtney, Michael McGee, and Kordell Norfleet all picked up major decisions. Prior to the dual, ASU recognized graduating seniors Anthony Valencia, Chad Porter, Alex Torres and Marlee Smith. ASU now prepares to host the Pac-12 Championships March 6 inside Desert Financial Arena.

"Obviously, Lehigh doesn't have the name and the football that people know, but certainly in wrestling everyone knows Lehigh," head coach Zeke Jones said. "They're obviously a great team. To get our hand raised against a good Pennsylvania team is not easy and I'm glad our guys were able to do it today. I think overall a 'W' is good. I'm a little disappointed in Anthony's loss, I think we're going to have to piece him back together before we get into the conference meet and nationals. We need him to be ready if we're going to take home a trophy - a gold trophy -  but it was good to see Kordell score a lot of points. Nummer was wrestling good. He got caught on the edge of his match, but I think he's starting to turn the corner and show people he is getting better."

125: Brandon Courtney (ASU) over Sheldon Seymour (LEH) (MD 10-2)
For two periods, Courtney's scoreline looked as if it would be a misleading one. Courtney led 3-1 going into the third period, which would be a tighter scoreline than any Sun Devil supporter would have liked to see. Seymour got within one with 1:09 left in the third period. It was not until Courtney was awarded a takedown with 26 seconds left that the victory would look to be sealed. With 12 seconds left, Courtney broke the match open with a takedown-to-four point nearfall to earn him his rightful scoreline of 10-2, his tenth point coming from the riding time bonus.

133: Michael McGee (ASU) over Satoshi Abe (LEH) (MD 12-4)
McGee was in complete control of his match from start to finish. In under a minute, McGee took down his opponent for an early 2-0 lead. Abe fought back with an escape, but McGee built on his lead with another takedown to go up 4-1. The remaining time in the first consisted of McGee waiting for his opponent to collapse. McGee increased the lead to six with a takedown and escape in quick succession. He completed a smooth move that earned him plaudits from the crowd, to dodge his opponent and jog back to the center of the mat. Abe got a pair of escapes to cut McGee's lead to four. After serious persistence, McGee was awarded a takedown to make it 9-3 with 36 seconds left. Lehigh got another escape, but McGee was not done for the day. As Abe tried to escape, McGee got another takedown to close the match out 12-4, earning a major decision.

141: Dan Moran (LEH) over Mykey Ramos (ASU) (Dec 7-2)
Multiple maneuvers from Ramos made him look to be the frontrunner in the matchup, but Moran persisted. Ramos struggled to get on the front foot inside the last minute, but a potentially dangerous hold got him out of a risky situation. A series of Lehigh attacks were sustained by Ramos to continue his solid showing. On the scoreline first was Ramos with an escape, but Moran won a takedown not long after to put him ahead. With less than 20 seconds left in the second, an escape for Moran made it 3-1. Ramos stayed within reach in the third period, but a takedown for Moran put him up by two more. Ramos escaped to earn a point, but a takedown at the buzzer signified the end.

149: Kyle Parco (ASU) over Max Brignola (LEH) (Dec 5-2)
Parco broke open the deadlock half way through the first with a takedown. An escape for Brignola cut Parco's lead in half. With less than a minute and a half in the second period, Parco escaped to climb back up to a two-point lead. A second stall call for Brignola meant Parco would receive another point, making it a 4-1 match. Parco won the match 5-2 with his riding bonus.

157: Jacori Teemer (ASU) over Josh Humphreys (LEH) (Dec 8-5)
Teemer has spoken previously about his tendency to get off to a somewhat "slow start," and this match was no exception. The stalemate was broken with thirteen seconds left in the first period by a takedown from Teemer. The sequence underwent a review that was brought on by a Lehigh challenge, and Teemer's points were confirmed. Humphreys escaped Teemer twice to make it a tied match at two. The second period was scoreless for both ends. Teemer got back into the scoring rhythm in the third period after getting a takedown, and he added a four point nearfall to lead 8-3. A takedown for Humphreys in the end would not be enough to salvage the match, and Teemer won 8-5.

"I expected a high scoring match," Teemer said. "Last time we wrestled two years ago I had to reverse him to win in another high scoring match. I knew what he had, I knew what I had to do to win, and I'm just happy I got the job done against a high ranked opponent. I knew I needed that win to get that 'T' at Nationals. Postseason is right around the corner, so I just knew I needed this level of competition and I just needed that feel before nationals and the postseason."

165: Brian Meyer (LEH) over Anthony Valencia (ASU) (Dec 6-1)
At this point, the Sun Devils had a 14-3 lead over Lehigh. The first period was evenly distributed, ending scoreless. The beginning of the second period saw Valencia fall behind after an escape from Meyer. Valencia sustained pressure to maintain a one point deficit. Going into the third, Valencia trailed by three after Meyer got a takedown. Valencia escaped following another takedown for the opposing side. Meyer was awarded with riding time to make it a final scoreline of 6-1.

Zeke Jones on Anthony Valencia signifying the end of the 2015 recruiting class: "Anthony's a seventh-year, right? A senior. We're going to miss that 2015 number one recruiting class. That was the one that launched the program, put it into place that it is today, and I'll be forever grateful to that group of guys. We'll miss them, but once a Sun Devil, always a Sun Devil. They'll always be a part of who we are."

174: Jake Logan (LEH) over Ryan Rochford (ASU) (TF 20-5 7:00)
Rochford lost in a 20-5 tech fall.

184: Austin (AJ) Burkhart (LEH) over Josh Nummer (ASU) (Fall 4:51)
Nummer looked impressive in a passage of offensive attacks that amounted to the first points of the match. Leading by three thanks to his takedown and a penalty call on Burkhart, Nummer was looking confident and had energy around him. Burkhart won an escape in the first period to get him his first point. An escape for Nummer gave the Sun Devil a 4-1 lead in the second. Berkhardt got a takedown over Nummer to put him within one, and from there Burkhart kept Nummer in a defensive position that eventually led to Nummer being pinned at the edge.

197: Kordell Norfleet (ASU) over JT Davis (LEH) (MD 12-4)
Norfleet's match was incredibly pivotal to the Sun Devils' victory. ASU was trailing 14-17 until Norfleet's major gave the Sun Devils the points they needed to stay in the fight. Norfleet gained an early lead with a takedown. Davis escaped a minute later, but Norfleet grabbed another takedown to make it a 4-1 match after one period. Early in the second, Norfleet escaped and used a takedown to go up 7-2. The third began with Davis getting on the board first with an escape, and Norfleet built on his lead with a pair of takedowns and his riding bonus to earn the 12-4 major.

285: Cohlton Schultz (ASU) over Jordan Wood (LEH) (TB-1 4-2)
The deciding match began with a scoreless first frame. Schultz secured a one point lead with an escape in the second period. The third period consisted of a match-tying escape for Wood and thus an overtime period was added, but neither wrestler could do more than grapple and occasionally snap the other. Wood picked up another escape in the second overtime and looked to be tiring out Schultz, but the Sun Devil put Wood on the ground and twisted to the Mountain Hawks' back to get the takedown and win the match in sudden death with 12 seconds to spare and remain undefeated on the year.
