HUMBLE, Texas – The University of Colorado women's golf team shot a 297 in the final round of the ICON Invitational Tuesday and finished 14th overall.
The Buffaloes carded an 893 (296-300-297), finishing five strokes behind North Texas (888). Texas State placed 15th overall (911).
"Ball striking seems to be getting better overall for the team," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We are struggling with wedges and putting, but we will keep working and are determined to improve our performances."
Southern California maintained its lead in the team standings and won the tournament by 15 strokes. The Trojans shot a 14-under in the final round (274) and an 825 (39-under) for the enter event. Illinois ended up second, finishing with a 24-under 840 and Oklahoma State recorded a 19-under (845).
Natalie Vo finished the tournament tied for 36th, carding a 4-over 220, which was the second-best score of her collegiate career. Her final round was a 75 with three birdies and 10 pars at the par 72, 6,247-yard Golf Club of Houston. She shot a 2-over 38 on the front nine and a 1-over 37 on the back nine.
Malak Bouraeda entered the day 3-over and ended up 52nd after carding a 77 in the third round. She tied for the team-high, making 12 pars, but only sank one birdie to finish the tournament 8-over (224).
Hailey Schalk finished one stroke behind Bouraeda with a 225 to tie for 53rd. She recorded a 75 in her last round with a pair of birdies and made 11 pars. Diane Baillieux tied for 66th with a 228. Her final round was her best, a 2-over 74 with three birdies and 11 pars.
Lauren Gooding had the best individual round Tuesday for CU despite finishing 72nd (232). She shot a 73 with three birdies and made 12 pars.
Southern California's Amari Avery carded a 65 to break a three-way tie for first and won medalist honors with a 201 (65-71-65), defeating Texas Tech's Amy Taylor by one stroke (68-68-66—202).
Colorado has a little break before its next tournament, the Julie Inkster Spartan Invitational, in Fairfax, Calif., March 7-8.
