Bears Open Home Slate In Style

BERKELEY – California used a 10-run second inning on the way to a 12-1 five-inning victory to open the 2022 home slate at Levine-Fricke Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears (8-3) collected 14 hits on the day, including 11 base knocks in the dominant second frame. 12 different Bears recorded at least one hit with Sona Halajian going 2-for-2 at the plate. She also earned the win in the circle, improving to 5-0 on the year after going 3.0 innings while giving up just four hits and an earned run.

Kacey Zobac hit her second home run of the season, a 2-run shot well over the wall in right field. Kennedy Thomas also brought home two runs with a single in the 10-run second inning. Saint Mary's (4-7) had five players with a hit apiece.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first, Cal paraded through the lineup in the second frame, bringing 15 batters to the plate. Thomas opened the scoring with a single to right, plating Halajian and Alexis Bishop after both singled.

The Bears got three straight RBI doubles, the first from Tatum Anzaldo, followed by Acacia Anders and Makena Smith to make it 6-0 with two outs. Halajian doubled in her second at-bat of the inning before Bishop tripled to make it 8-0, California. Zobac stepped up to the plate and drilled a 1-2 pitch to make it 10-0, Bears, after two complete.

The Gaels got one back in the top half of the third on four hits, but Cal answered in the bottom of the inning. Three straight pinch-hit singles from Morgan Zamora, Olivia Silvestre and Aleia Agbayani helped the Bears plate two more to make it 12-1 through three innings.

Annabel Teperson started the fourth in the circle and gave up just one hit while striking out four.
