Trevor Halsema's Double in the 12th Wins it for USC Baseball

Feb 25, 2022

LOS ANGELES – In a back and forth contest between the USC baseball team and visiting Omaha Mavericks, Trevor Halsema got the last word for the Trojans, hitting a walk-off double in the 12th inning to give USC a 4-3 victory on Friday night at Dedeaux Field.

Halsema laced one off the wall to score Rhylan Thomas from second base with two outs in the 12th, clearing the Trojan dugout for a celebration on the field in the process. The Trojans move to 3-2 on the year, while Omaha, which was coming off a win at UCLA on Tuesday, falls to 2-4.

The lead changed hands four times on the night, with the Mavericks tying the game in the top of the eighth to send it to extras. The Trojan pitching staff gave up single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, but other than that, tossed nine scoreless frames, giving up one walk and scattering seven hits.

USC jumped ahead 1-0 thanks to a Nick Lopez double in the fifth, but the Mavericks came right back to tie it in the sixth and then take the lead with a homer in the seventh.

The Trojans bounced back with a two-run bottom of the seventh to go back on top 3-2, getting RBI from Thomas and Tyresse Turner. Thomas' run-scoring double in the seventh was one of two doubles on the day as he also led off the 12th with a two-bagger to get in scoring position for Halsema.

A sacrifice fly for Omaha tied it in the eighth and the pitching staffs combined for four scoreless frames before USC won it in the 12th.

USC starter Isaac Esqueda got the no-decision despite giving up just one earned run in 6.2 innings. Charlie Hurley picked up the win after tossing scoreless 11th and 12th innings. Adrian Colon-Rosado had four hits in the game and scored twice.
