Barney Touches All 4 To Drive in 3 After Single to RF Causes Costly Error

Mar 4, 2022

Baseball returned to Montlake tonight as the Huskies welcomed the 1-2 Yale Bulldogs to Husky Ballpark for their Home Opener - the first of a four-game series. The clouds parted as game time approached making for a beautiful Friday night of baseball.

The Huskies started heating up in the second as AJ Guerrero singled up the middle. Two batters later Mike Brown drove a shot to left center scoring the first run of the game.

Starting Pitcher Jared Engman was solid until the fifth inning when a single and a walk put two on base with one out. He battled through however, getting out of the inning with grounders to shortstop and second base.

In the bottom of the 7th the Huskies found themselves with two quick outs when Cam Clayton stepped to the plate and drove a single up the middle. Jarred Mazzaferro took one for the team in the At Bat that followed giving the Huskies two on base. Following a pitching change, McKay Barney ripped a heated ground ball past a diving first baseman. It was still smoking by the time it got to the right fielder who found it too much to handle as it got by him for an error. Barney saddled up and charged around the bases finally coming to a stop in a heap of turf, safe at home plate.

The Huskies would threaten again in the bottom of the 8th following a lead off double by AJ Guerrero and a pair of walks, but would leave 3 stranded taking a 4-0 lead into the ninth.

Engman ultimately took home the win going 6 innings with 4 strikeouts, 2 hits, and only 1 walk. Stefan Raeth, Stu Flesland III, and Ryan Velazquez all saw time on the mound as well recording a combined 7 strikeouts with 1 hit and 1 walk.  Engman improved his record to 1-2 in front of 365 fans.
