Men's Tennis Earns Two Sweeps; Improve to 16-0

SAN DIEGO – The Utah men's tennis team improved to 16-0 on the season following a pair of 4-0 sweeps on Sunday. The Utes opened the day against San Diego State and closed it against UC San Diego. Utah is one of two undefeated teams left in the nation. 
 
Utah vs. SDSU
Utah got out to a fast start against San Diego State as they continued their winning ways in doubles. The Utes Bruno Caula and Francisco Bastias won the first match 6-4. A few minutes later, Mathias Gavelin and Jayson Blando won 6-4 to clinch the doubles point for the Utes. No. 1 doubles went unfinished. 
 
Needing three singles matches to clinch the point, the Utes went to work. Gavelin made it 2-0 in favor of the Utes after winning in No. 5 singles. Gavelin came away with a 6-0 first set victory and finished the match-winning 6-4. 
 
Bastias followed with a singles win of his own. In No. 2 singles, Bastias defeated Johannes Seeman, 6-2, 6-2, increasing the Utes lead to 3-0. 
 
Bruno Krenn clinched the win for the Utes with a three-set victory. After falling 6-2 in the first set to Judson Blair, Krenn bounced back and won the following two sets to clinch the match. He won 6-3 and 6-1 in the second and third sets. 
 
The rest of the matches went unfinished, but the Utes had a set victory in each. 
 
Utah vs. UCSD 
Playing their second match of the day, the Utes came out and dropped the No. 2 doubles. Needing to win the next two, to earn the doubles point, the Utes responded as Capalbo and Espin Busleiman won 6-2, tying doubles at 1-1. Caula and Rian Tan clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory in No. 3 doubles. 
 
The match went 2-0 in favor of the Utes when Caula won in No. 3 singles. He defeated Zach Ermert, 6-4, 6-0 for the Utes. Jayson Blando followed with with a singles win. J. Blando defeated Jett Cole, 7-6 (1), 6-2, to earn the victory in No. 5 singles. 
 
Capalbo earned another singles victory on the season in No. 1 singles. His victory over Daniel Traxler in No. 1 singles clinched the win for the Utes. Capalbo won 6-4, 6-4. 
 
The rest of Utah's matches went unfinished.

The Utes return to action on Friday, March 11, when they head to Stanford, Calif., to face Stanford. This will be Utah's Pac-12 opener. The match will start at 3 p.m. MT.
