Ninth Inning Heroics Fall Short In 1-0 Husky Loss To Yale

Mar 6, 2022

An overcast morning cleared at game time making for a beautiful day of baseball for the nearly 1500 fans in attendance at Husky Ballpark on Sunday. Up 2-1 in a 4-game series with Yale, a series win was on the line for the Dawgs.

Starter Case Matter took the hill for the Huskies but got into trouble early on two singles and a walk. With the bases loaded however, he got out of a jam with a pop out to left. He quickly settled down however, giving up just 2 hits over the next 3 innings of work. Unfortunately a throwing error to lead off the 4th put a runner on who would eventually score setting up Case as the pitcher of record with an unearned run.

The Huskies were unable to get much going until the bottom of the 9th. Facing a one-run deficit, Johnny Tincher lead off the inning with a walk. Will Simpson stepped up next and drove one to center drawing cheers from the crowd, but it was ultimately caught.  With AJ Guerrero at the plate, Luke Rohlede, a pinch runner for Tincher, stole second putting the tying run in scoring position. Guerrero drew a walk next putting the winning run on first.  Mike Brown stepped to the plate next and the crowd was buzzing with the memory of his 9th inning, game tying homerun the night before. Could he do it again? Unfortunately it wasn't to be as he went down swinging.  With two outs, all eyes were on batter Kyle Fossum. He put a solid charge into a 2-1 pitch, but unfortunately came up short flying out to right field to end the game.

Starter Case Matter took the loss moving to 0-1. He pitched 4 innings with 5 strike outs, 2 walks, 3 hits, and 1 unearned run.
