Men's Tennis Falls to No. 10 Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – The Utah men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Friday afternoon when they were defeated, 4-0, by No. 10 Stanford. 
 
After dropping No. 2 doubles, Utah came back and won No. 1 doubles. Utah's duo of Franco Capalbo and Geronimo Espin Busleiman defeated the 32nd ranked doubles team of Arthur Fery and Axel Geller, 6-3. 
 
Needing to win the third doubles point to win the doubles point, Jayson Blando and Mathias Gavelin were in a battle. With the match 5-4 in favor of the Cardinal, the set went to a deciding point. Utah came up on the wrong end and was defeated 6-4, dropping the doubles point. 
 
Moving to singles, the Utes battled a Stanford team that had five ranked ITA single players. No. 102 Axel Geller made it 2-0 in favor of Stanford after a 7-5, 6-1 win in No. 2 singles. Capalbo battled in No. 1 singles as he faced the second-ranked singles player in the ITA, Arthur Fery. Fery came out on top 6-4, 6-2. 
 
Stanford clinched the match when Sangeet Sridhar won in No. 6 singles. Sridhar won the first set 6-2. Krenn battled as he had the second set to 6-5 before falling 7-5. 
 
The Utes had taken a set in the rest of the three matches. No. 118 singles player Espin Busleiman and No. 97 ranked Alexandre Rotsaert were locked in a battle. After splitting the first two sets, they were tied 1-1 in the third. 
 
Bruno Caula came out and took set one, 6-4 over No. 59 ranked Max Basing. Basing came back and took the second set and led 1-0 in the third set before the match went unfinished. 
 
Mathias Gavelin again locked himself in a battle with No. 123 Aryan Chaudhary. Gavelin dropped set one but bounced back to win set two, 6-3. In the third set, Gavelin led 2-1 when the match would go unfinished.

The Utes return to action on Sunday, March 13, when they head to Berkeley, Calif., to face #43 Cal. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m. MT.
