Mar 12, 2022

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Husky beach volleyball team had its first dramatic clinching moments of the season today at Cal Poly's Swanson Beach courts, as Scarlett Dahl and Kyra Petersen finished off a 3-2 victory for the Huskies over San Jose State.

In the day's second match, the Dawgs were close but couldn't earn the upset over the host 11th-ranked Mustangs. Emma Calle and Hannah Yerex got the point in the 1-4 loss, as the Husky No. 5 pair went 2-0 today.

Against the Spartans, Yerex and Calle were the first UW pair to finish, earning a 21-19, 21-8 win over Rice/Culver, making it 1-1 overall. The No. 1 pair of Chloe Loreen and Natalie Robinson had a 21-18, 21-10 win to put the Huskies up, 2-1.

At No. 4, Ashley Shook and Maeve Griffin lost the first set but won the second, but couldn't close it out against Boerstra/Smevog, falling 21-14, 18-21, 15-11, which tied up the dual. At No. 3, Dahl and Petersen pulled out a 22-20 second set over Harper/Schafer after losing the first, 18-21. The Dawgs pulled away to win set three, 15-9, to clinch the win.

Against 11th-ranked Cal Poly on their home courts, the Dawgs managed two of the five first sets. Calle and Yerex pulled out a 25-23 first set marathon, lost a deuce set in the second, 19-21, but then won 15-9 over Graff/Johansen for UW's one point. Dahl and Petersen won their first set at No. 2, but lost a tight third set, 13-15, to Ferch/Lombard of Cal Poly.

Robinson and Loreen were also right with Cal Poly's No. 1 duo of Miric Connor but couldn't quite grab a set, falling, 21-18, 21-19.

The Huskies (3-3) will now be off for finals week before traveling to Arizona the following week to play six matches in four days including the Pac-12 South Invitational.
