The Perfect Ending to an Era - Hockey Completes Sweep

Mar 12, 2022

TEMPE, Ariz. – Oceanside Ice Arena received the sendoff it deserved Saturday night, as Sun Devil Hockey (17-17-1) and its senior class completed a series sweep of Long Island University with a 5-1 victory in front of an electric, sold-out crowd in the final ASU game. The arena served as the home of the Sun Devils for the last three decades.

"It was really cool. Especially that fifth goal," said head coach Greg Powers. "The way that they scored it, and how pretty it was, and how selfless all three were. It was like no one wanted to actually take the final shot. I think it speaks a lot about our senior class, we're gonna miss all of them. They've all been so good to our program. They mean so much to everyone, and what we've done here."

The nine seniors combined for 11 of the 14 points with graduate senior Johnny Walker poetically scoring the eventual game-winning goal at the rink he first started skating in. Graduate captain Colin Theisen recorded two assists to also set the new single-season program record for points in a season with 42.

"It means a lot," said Theisen. "It is definitely an honor, and I couldn't do it without my teammates if it wasn't for some great players this year, including seven over there and Powers put me in a great spot to work hard, and I gave effort and I knew it was going to come, and that's the way it went."

Graduate senior Jack Becker and senior Chris Grando bookended the scoring affair, while Jacob Wilson, Jordan Sandhu and Sean Dhooghe (3) added assists of their own in their final collegiate game.
