BERKELEY, Calif. — The Arizona Wildcats (11-4, 1-1) scored eight runs over the final three innings on Saturday to secure a 10-4 win over the California Golden Bears (7-7, 1-1) and set up a game three rubber match tomorrow afternoon.
Arizona starting pitcher Garrett Irvin delivered a quality start for the Wildcats, limiting the Golden Bears to three earned runs on five hits while striking out six. He earned the win to move to 2-1 on the year.
The Cats and Bears traded solo runs in the first, second, and both halves of the fifth inning, leading to an even ballgame at 2-2 through the first six frames.
Outfielder Chase Davis gave Arizona the lead with a three-run opposite field home run in the seventh. He sent a slider over the wall in left center for his team-leading fourth homer of the year.
California plated two in the bottom of the seventh to bring it back to a one-run game but Arizona went on to score five unanswered runs in the eighth and ninth to create the final margin.
The Wildcats bullpen held the Golden Bears without a hit and kept the scoreboard clean while working around four walks.
