Avery 68, Muzi 70 Lead USC Women's Golf Second Round At Northrop

Amari Avery fired a second-round 3-under 68

Freshman Amari Avery fired a 3-under 68 while senior Katherine Muzi carded a 1-under 70 to lead USC's second-round efforts at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Monday (March 14) at the Palos Verdes G.C.

USC, winners of its last two tournaments, shaved eight strokes off its first-round score and now sit tied for sixth with Duke at a combined 14-over 582 (295-287). Oregon took over the lead at 2-under with Virginia one back, Wake Forest third at 4-over.

Avery turned in her sixth round under 70 this year in just 10 outings and is now tied for 15th at 2-over 144 (76-68). She started her morning 2-over through 5, got to par with birdies on 6 and 7 and birdied 11, 14 and 16 on the back for her 68.

Muzi, seeking her third top 10 this year, is tied for seventh at 1-under 141 (71-70) after posting her team-best 13th round of par or better. She was 1-over going out, got to red with birdies on 10 and 11 and finished with pars the rest of the way.

Sophomore Michaela Morard is tied for 38th at 6-over 148 (76-72), freshman Xin (Cindy) Kou is tied for 52nd at 9-over 151 (78-73) and sophomore Brianna Navarrosa is tied for 58th at 10-over 152 (76-76).

The tournament concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT.
