Ducks Fall in Pac-12 Opener

Mar 18, 2022

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah scored four times in the first three innings as No. 11 Oregon fell to the Utes, 5-2, in the Pac-12 opener for both teams Friday at Dumke Family Softball Stadium.

The two squads will play a doubleheader tomorrow after moving Sunday's scheduled game to Saturday in an effort to get ahead of a weather system moving into the Salt Lake City area this weekend.

How it Happened: After Utah (16-11, 1-0) scored a run in the bottom of the first, the Ducks (19-4, 0-1) knotted the game in the second. Paige Sinicki reached on a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error on the play. An out later, Rachel Cid singled up the middle to score Sinicki and tie the game, 1-1.

The Utes tacked on another run in the second and two more in the third to take a 4-1 lead.

Ariel Carlson cut into that lead with a home run to deep centerfield in the fourth, but that was the final tally of the game for Oregon.

Noteworthy: Allee Bunker extended her hitting streak to 13 games with a lead-off single in the first inning, part of her 2-for-3 day at the plate. Hanna Delgado extended her hitting streak to nine games. Carlson's homer was her team-leading ninth of the season.

On Deck: Oregon and Utah will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Pacific. The Ducks will take Sunday off before playing at BYU on Monday.
