LOS ANGELES – The No. 25 USC baseball team erased a 5-1 deficit in the eighth inning, but Cal scored four runs in the ninth to pick up a 9-5 win on Saturday at Dedeaux Field.
USC falls to 12-5 overall and 3-2 in Pac-12 play with the loss, while Cal improves to 9-9, 2-3.
After a quiet offensive afternoon, USC exploded for four runs in the eighth, getting a two-run double from D'Andre Smith and a two-run single from Adrian Colon-Rosado. The Trojans had the go-ahead run on first with one out, but he was stranded there.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as Dylan Beavers hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth and Cal added runs on a wild pitch and sacrifice fly to go back up by four.
USC got a runner on in the bottom of the ninth, but a double-play ended the game.
