Washington Drops Second Game of Cal Series

BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington dropped the second game of the Pac-12 opening weekend series Saturday to California, 3-4.
 
Cal struck quickly, putting two on the board in the bottom of the first. Klingler responded with a three-run home run in the top of the second. She is now one home run away from being 10th on the all-time Husky career list for career home runs.
 
Cal was able to answer, tying the game in the third. Both teams were unable to find the go-ahead run, until the Golden Bears homered in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win. Kelley Lynch started the game in the circle, but Brooke Nelson and Pat Moore also saw time at the pitching position. Moore received the loss and moves to 4-1 on the season.
 
Washington will close the series Sunday at 2:00 pm on the Pac-12 Network.
 
CALIFORNIA SCORING
 
1st: A Golden Bear single moved the runner on third to home.
1st: With the bases loaded, another Cal single put a second run on the board.
 
2nd: Baylee Klingler homered to center field to score Megan Vandegrift and SilentRain Espinoza.
 
3rd: Cal grounded out to second, scoring the runner on third.
 
7th: Golden Bear home run.
 
CALIFORNIA NOTES
 
SilentRain Espinoza earned the start at third and went 1-for-3 (her first hit of the year).
 
Baylee Klingler hit her 13th home run of the season. She continues her season-long 11 game hit streak and 13-game reached base streak. Klingler needs one more home run to move into 10th on the all-time Husky career list.
 
Jenn Cummings was hit by pitch twice, and has now reached base safely in the past 11 games.
 
Kelley Lynch was given the start in the circle, but Brooke Nelson and Pat Moore also saw time at the pitching position.
 
The last time the Huskies lost to the Golden Bears was 4/17/16 in Seattle (3-5). The last time Washington lost in Berkeley was 4/26/15 (5-9). A one-run margin is the closest margin of win/loss for either team since Washington defeated Cal 3-2 in Berkeley on 4/30/17.
