Beavers Lose In Series Finale

Mar 20, 2022

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tanner Smith's second-inning run-scoring double wasn't enough as No. 5 Oregon State dropped a 3-1 decision to Arizona State in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

The Sun Devils, trailing 1-0 into the final frame, scored three runs in the top half of the ninth for the comeback victory. Nate Baez tied the game with an infield single, Jacob Tobias walked with the bases loaded and Kai Murphy drove in a run on a sacrifice fly on a foul out in the frame.

Smith's double marked the Beavers' lone run. He drove a pitch from ASU starter Tyler Meyer down the left field line, bringing Mason Guerra from second. Guerra was the lone Beaver with multiple hits, tallying two.

Christian Bodlovich picked up the win for ASU (9-12 overall, 1-2 Pac-12), improving to 2-1. Brock Peery earned the save, his third of the season, with a scoreless ninth. Meyer, who did not figure in the decision, held OSU to four hits and a run with nine strikeouts in seven innings.

Five OSU (14-4, 4-2) pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts; Ben Ferrer led the way with seven in five scoreless innings. DJ Carpenter took the loss after allowing all three runs in the ninth. He dropped to 1-1 on the year.
