Jankowski’s Clincher Helps Sun Devils Upset No. 12 Cal in McInerney’s 550th Career Win

TEMPE, Ariz. — Down 4-2 in the third set to Cal's Valentina Ivanov, Cali Jankowski took a deep breath and exhaled.

Huddled around Court 5 at the Whiteman Tennis Center, teammates and fans watched the senior Jankowski rally to win the next four games and steal a win over No. 12 Cal, 4-3, on Friday afternoon, delivering the 550th victory of head coach Sheila McInerney's career.

Jankowski helped the Sun Devils topple the Golden Bears, the highest-ranked team in the Pac-12 Conference, for the first time in four years (March 31, 2018).

The Sun Devils dug themselves out of an early hole after surrendering the lone doubles point and jumped the Golden Bears at the start of singles play, as four of six first sets broke ASU's way. Marianna Argyrokastriti made quick work of Makenna Theil in straight sets (6-1, 6-1) to even the contest at one apiece.

Cal stacked two singles wins minutes apart from one another, on Courts 2 & 3, to pit the Sun Devils in an unnerving 3-1 bind. Patricija Spaka, the team's cool, calm and collected freshman, grinded out her 12th win this season in a resounding 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Giulia Morlet came out on the right side of a second-set tiebreaker against No. 101 Haley Giavara, pulling out a 6-2, 7-6 upset win on Court 1. Suddenly, after the heroics of Spaka and Morlet, the Sun Devils had pulled even with the Golden Bears, 3-3.

Fans and players from both teams then shuffled over to Court 5, where Jankowski was on her way to finalizing a tremendous comeback.

It's the start of what could potentially be a huge weekend for the Sun Devils, who are fully healthy for the first time since mid-February and seeking one last push before the postseason.
