Cougars Drop Saturday Contest to Utah

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 2, 2022) – Washington State dropped a 10-3 decision to Utah at Bailey-Brayton Field Saturday afternoon.
 
A season-high 2,240 fans attended the game, the most at Bailey-Brayton Field since 2015.
 
The Cougars (9-17, 1-10 Pac-12) received a four-hit game from Jack Smith and home runs from Jake Meyer and Keith Jones II. Utah (17-9-1, 4-4 Pac-12) tallied 16 hits and scored eight runs in the middle innings to clinch the series. Ute starter Jaden Harris was impressive, allowing one earned run on five hits and struck out four in six innings.
 
KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
In the second, Utah jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a single, error, sac bunt and two-run single. In the bottom of the frame, WSU put runners on second and third with one out but Utah ended the threat with a strikeout and groundout.
 
Utah added two runs on three hits in the fourth, two in the fifth and four in the sixth on five hits for a 10-0 advantage.
 
In the seventh, Meyer led off the inning with an opposite-field solo home run to right centerfield.
 
In the eighth, Jones II hammered a no-doubter over the wall in right field for a two-run shot and his first career homer.
