More Late-Game Heroics for USC Baseball as Trojans Beat San Jose State, 7-5

Apr 2, 2022

LOS ANGELES – Trevor Halsema hit a pair of homers, and Tyresse Turner and Adrian Colon-Rosado hit the game-tying and winning shots in the eighth, as USC powered its way past San Jose State in a late-game comeback for the second game in a row, beating the Spartans 7-5 on Saturday afternoon.

The back-and-forth contest saw the lead change hands four times, but three runs in the eighth for USC sealed it as the Trojans move to 16-8 with the non-conference win. San Jose State falls to 14-14.

Back-to-back homers by Garret Guillemette and Halsema gave USC an early 2-0 lead, which then extended to a 3-0 advantage when Halsema hit his second home run of the day. Halsema also homered late in Friday night's contest, giving him a three homers in his last three at bats at that point.

The Spartans came right back, scoring a pair in the fifth and then getting a two-run shot from Dalton Bowling in the sixth to go ahead 4-3. Halsema tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth and the 4-4 score would hold until the eighth.

San Jose State's Charles McAdoo hit a go-ahead solo-homer for the visitors to lead off the top of the eighth, but USC pitcher Kyle Wisch retired the next three batters in order to bring the Trojan bats back to the plate.

Turner homered to lead the inning off, sending a shot to right to make it a 5-5 game. Colon-Rosado immediately followed with a homer to right as well, putting USC ahead for good. Nick Lopez added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-5.

Matt Keating got his second save of the series and fifth of the season, tossing a 1-2-3 ninth and ending the game on a strikeout.

It was the eighth time this season USC has scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning or later.
