No. 21 USC Women’s Tennis Doubles Up On 4-0 Wins At Marks Stadium

Apr 5, 2022

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. – The No. 21 USC women's tennis team scored back-to-back sweeps in a doubleheader at Marks Stadium today. The Trojans notched a pair of 4-0 victories to improve to 14-10.

With the morning's clear skies overhead, the Trojans took the courts against Hawaii for the first action of the day and quickly collected the doubles point with wins on courts three and one. USC's Danielle Willson and McKenna Koenig set the winning tone with a swift 6-0 win at the No. 3 slot, and then Eryn Cayetano and Salma Ewing secured the 1-0 lead with their 6-2 victory on center court, suspending action on court two.

In singles, the Trojans had #6 Eryn Cayetano hit the gas and make it a speedy 2-0 advantage with her 6-1, 6-0 win over Satsuki Takamura on court two. From there, USC rattled off a swift stretch of straight-set wins. Leyden Games built a 3-0 foundation for the Trojans with her 6-1, 6-2 win on court six, and then #41 Salma Ewing came through with the clincher on a 6-4,6-1 victory on center court. The remaining matches were abandoned with USC leading on courts three, four and five.

A few hours later, USC and CSUN would take the courts together with some changes to the Trojan lineup. The Women of Troy got to work with Eryn Cayetano and Salma Ewing quickly defeating CSUN's Coetzee/Fraile Toboso 6-1 on center court. Shortly thereafter, USC's Piper suffered an injury that forced the Trojans to retire the match on court two. Trojan twins Isabelle and Gabrielle Lee hauled in the doubles point for USC, defeating Zhyteina/O'neill 6-4 on court three.

USC stayed the course in singles, with #78 Naomi Cheong punching up a smooth 6-0, 6-2 win on court two to light the fuse. At the number six slot, Games produced a 6-1, 6-2 victory to nudge USC along in a winning direction, and #6 Cayetano pounced on the clincher with a 6-3, 6-1 decision. The remaining matches were suspended.

The Trojans now take a trip down the 405 to take on San Diego on Friday at 12 PM. Sunday, they'll return home for another double header as they host Oregon (11 a.m.) and Cal Poly (3 p.m.).
