Beavers Battle Top-Level Competition at Pac-12 Invitational

Apr 10, 2022

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. – The No. 18-ranked Oregon State men's rowing team battled some of the best teams in the nation this weekend at the Pac-12 Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif.

"It's incredibly hard to go against these top teams," said Oregon State head coach Gabe Winkler. "Learning takes time. Improvement takes relentless effort to gain just one second in a race. That's all I ask for: to be better each piece. No steps backwards. Things that seem like an insurmountable gap can be closed with incremental change. We are doing that. These guys are learning. They are improving and they will be stronger each week."

The Beavers Varsity 8 opened the event by falling to No. 14 Wisconsin Saturday morning – checking in with a time of 6:00.17, just over eight seconds behind the Badgers. The boat, which consisted of Ethan deBorja (coxswain), Dylan Stengel, Ryan Ghalayini, Jackson Mastrorilli, Cal Labonski, Tristan Gavin, Ryan Coulter, Nils Patrick and Colin Lindquist returned with a tight race in the afternoon, finishing four second behind No. 11 Boston U.

The Beaver JV 8 also fell to Wisconsin in the morning, and finished second to Boston U in the afternoon. The OSU 3V8 finished behind Wisconsin in its lone race of the day.

Sunday featured more high-level racing, as the OSU Varsity 8 and JV8 both came up short against No. 7 Syracuse. The Oregon State 3V8 placed behind California in the final race of the day.

The Beavers will return to Dexter Lake on Saturday to host Stanford.
