UCLA, USC, Washington with quarterfinal wins at the 2022 Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championship

OJAI, Calif. - No. 5 seed UCLA, No. 8 seed Washington and No. 2 seed USC posted victories in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championship at Libbey Park on Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the tournament.

No. 5 seed UCLA upset No. 4 seed Utah (4-2) in the quarterfinals match on Thursday to advance to the semifinals where they will face off against No. 8 seed Washington. The Bruins clinched the doubles point with wins on court three (Jeff Fradkin/Bryce Pereira) and two (Karl Lee/Max Wild). Stefan Leustian was the first to finish in singles on court No. 5, collecting a 6-3, 6-1 win for the Bruins. He was followed by a three set victory from Giacomo Revelli on court No. 2 (6-4, 2-6, 6-3). The Utes managed to climb up from a 3 point deficit thanks to Geronino Espin Busleiman’s victory on court No. 3 (7-6 (6), 7-5) followed by Bruno Krenn on court No. 6 (6-4, 4-6, 6-3) to make the score 3-2. It ultimately came down to the last two matches on court No. 1 (Zahraj v. Capalbo) and court No. 4 (Pereira v. Caula). At the No. 4 position, Bryce Pereira secured the deciding point for the Bruins in a third set tiebreaker (7-6 (4), 1,6, 7-6 (3)). 

In a match that came down to the very last, the eighth-seeded Huskies defeated the No. 1 seed and Pac-12 regular-season Champion, Arizona (4-2), with the clincher coming from Cesar Bouchelaghem on court No. 5 in a second set tiebreaker (6-3, 7-6 (4)). 

The Huskies captured the doubles point with wins on courts two (Clement Chidekh/Nedim Suko) and one (​​Jack Davis/Ewen Lumsden). The Wildcats responded with Colton Smith’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Ewen Lumsden on court No. 3, later followed by Herman Hoeyeraal’s victory over Han-Chih Lin on court No. 4 (6-2, 7-6 (4)). In the end, the Huskies came out on top against the No. 1 seed thanks to three singles victories on court Nos. 1 (Clement Chidekh), 2 (Jack Davis) and 5 (Cesar Bouchelaghem). Washington’s victory marks the first time that an eighth-seed team has reached the semifinals of the Pac-12 men’s Tennis Championship tournament. 

The Trojans defeated No. 7 seed California, 4-0, to claim their spot in the semifinals of the Championship. USC clinched the doubles point with wins on courts three (Sam Rubell/Ryder Jackson) and two (Peter Makk/Lodewijk Weststrate). Dostanic was the first to finish in singles on top court, collecting a 6-4, 6-2 win. He was followed by victories from Peter Makk on court No. 3 (6-3, 6-4) and Sam Rubell on court No. 6 (7-6 (3), 6-4). 

*The final match of the day between third-seed Stanford and sixth-seed Arizona State has been postponed until tomorrow morning due to rain.The match will resume tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. PT, with the winner playing USC at 5 p.m. The Cardinal currently leads 3-0.*
