Smith Hits 11th Home Run In Game Two Loss

OXFORD, Ohio – Makena Smith hit her 11th home run of the season and California collected four extra base hits, but Miami (Ohio) rallied for a comeback win in the seventh inning on Saturday at Miami Softball Stadium.

Acacia Anders, Alexis Bishop and Sona Halajian all recorded two hits apiece for the Bears (25-20). Adriana Barlow hit a pair of home runs to lead the Redhawks (28-13).  

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a pitcher's duel for the first two innings, the Cal bats got hot in the top half of the third. Smith started the frame with a home run deep over the wall in left and made it 2-0 after an Anders double and a Halajian RBI single. It was 3-0, Bears, when Bishop doubled and scored on a Kacey Zobac RBI double, the fourth extra base hit of the frame.

Miami got one back in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run of their own and it was 3-1 Cal after three complete.

California was able to get things going again in the fifth after a hit by pitch and an Anders single through the right side. After Anzaldo raced to third on the single, Cal made it 4-1 on a double steal as Anzaldo beat the throw to the plate. The Bears added one more when Bishop hit a long RBI single off the wall, scoring Anders to make it 5-1 after the fifth.

The Miami bats came alive in the home half of the seventh, scoring six runs on five hits with four home runs to take the game and secure the weekend series.
