Sun Devils in Second at Halftime at Pac-12 Men's Golf Championships

Apr 25, 2022
Mason Andersen is tied for ninth at even-par 142 through two holes.

After 36 holes and at the halfway point of the 2022 Pac-12 Men's Golf Tournament in suburban Seattle, the Arizona State Sun Devil men's golf team finds itself in a good spot, down four strokes to host Washington through Monday at the par-71, 6,979-yard Aldarra Golf Club in Sammamish.

ASU shot even-par 710 (346-364) on the day, while Washington shot 4-under 706 (346-360).

Freshman Josele Ballester is fifth at 4-under 138 (68-70), three back of leader Barclay Brown of Stanford who shot 7-under 135 (68-67). Mason Andersen (69-73) and Preston Summerhays (71-71) are both tied for ninth at even-par 142, while James Leow is at 1-over 143 (70-73) and tied for 12th.

The grueling 36-hole day took its toll on the 72-player field in the afternoon - 23 players were at par-or-better during a first round with a 72.9 scoring average, but only 11 players remained at level-or-better after a second round that played over a full shot tougher (74.2).

The teams get to sleep in a bit on Tuesday, with ASU starting at 11:12 a.m. PT while team leader Ballester tees at 12:12 p.m. ASU will tee with Washington and Stanford, as the Cardinal are in third at 2-over 712 (359-353).

COACH THURMOND HAS THREE RINGS: Sun Devil head coach Matt Thurmond earned three Pac-10 titles in his 14 years at Washington, as the Huskies claimed the team title in 2010, 2009 and 2005. UW had not won the Pac-12 title since 1988 prior to its 2005 championship.

PAC-10/12 SUCCESS AT ASU: Arizona State has won 12 Pac-10 titles in its 42 chances, including a conference record six straight from 1995-2000. In addition to the six straight Pac-10 titles, ASU's other six Pac-10 titles were in 1979 (its first year in the league), 1981, 1989, 1990, 1993 and 2008. ASU tied for the league title in 2005 with Washington but lost on a tiebreaker formula, and the league decided to go to a playoff format after that season.
