No. 17 USC Lacrosse Scores 12-6 Senior Day Win Over UC Davis

LOS ANGELES – The 17th-ranked USC lacrosse team (13-3) concluded its regular-season schedule with a 12-6 win over UC Davis (5-8) at McAlister Field on Saturday, April 30. The Women of Troy honored the careers of graduates Elyse DarcyMaggie RootKelsey Huff, and Lizzy Wagner; and seniors Michaela McMahonFinley UelandKatie Ramsay, and Kaleigh Brennan in pre-game ceremonies for Senior Day.
 
KEY PLAYERS

  • Redshirt Fr. attacker Isabelle Vitale scored three goals on four shots for her sixth-career hat trick.
  • So. attacker Claudia Shevitz had three points with two goals and an assist with one ground ball and caused turnover.
  • Sr. midfielder Katie Ramsay had four draw controls and scored one goal to go with two ground balls.
  • Fr. midfielder Catherine Lord corralled four draw controls and picked up three ground balls.
  • Jr. defender Danielle Carson had career highs with five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
  • Sr. defender Kaleigh Brennan picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. She also had an assist taken away after a goal was called back due to a procedural infraction.
  • Sr. defender Lizzy Wagner caused three turnovers and picked up a pair of ground balls.
  • Sr. midfielder Kelsey Huff returned to action after missing four games and had a goal, an assist, and a ground ball.
  • For UC Davis, Grace Gebhardt led all players with 11 draw controls. Kendall Seifert scored three goals for the hat trick. In goal, Ashley Laing took the loss but finished with 19 saves and three ground balls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • USC outshot UC Davis, 46-19, and had its fourth-highest shot count in a single game in program history. The Trojans dominated the chase for ground balls with a 25-11 edge and produced their sixth game this season with 25 ground balls or more. The Aggies had the advantage in the center circle with a 13-9 count in draw controls.
  • UC Davis scored the first goal of the game, but Ella Heaney, Ramsay, Root, and Shevitz scored four unanswered goals before the Aggies had one more to trim the lead to two after one quarter, 4-2. The teams went back and forth in the second quarter but USC got goals from Shevtiz, Vitale, and Maggie Brown, to lead, 7-4, at halftime.
  • The Trojans held the Aggies scoreless for nearly 25 minutes and won the third quarter, 3-0, to hold a 10-4 lead heading into the final quarter. Huff scored her goal and then assisted on a second goal by Brown to extend USC's lead to seven goals at 12-5 before the Aggies scored one more with under a minute to play to make the final score 12-6.

UP NEXT

  • USC takes on either No. 23 Arizona State (9-7, 7-3 Pac-12) or California (2-15, 1-9) in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament next Thursday, May 5, at Sun Devil Lacrosse Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. First draw is set for 7 p.m. PT and the game will be shown on Pac-12 Networks.

GAME NOTES

  • USC improved to 7-0 all-time against UC Davis with a 4-0 record in home games against the Aggies.
  • The Women of Troy moved to 84-23 in games played when they are ranked.
  • The Trojans improved to 62-18 all-time in home games and to 57-15 on McAlister Field.
  • USC's four-game win streak is its longest of the season and the longest since a seven-game win streak which included six wins in the shortened 2020 season and the 2021 season opener.
