May 3, 2022
Preston Summerhays becomes the third straight Sun Devil to win Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year

The Pac-12 announced its men's golf honors for the 2021-22 season as five Sun Devils earned a mention, including its third straight Freshman/Newcomer of the Year.

Leading the way for the Sun Devils is Preston Summerhays who earned Freshman/Newcomer of the Year, first-team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman team. Graduate student Mason Andersen and senior Cameron Sisk earned All-Pac-12 first team mentions, as Josele Ballester earned All-Pac-12 first-team and was selected to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team.

Junior David Puig earned second-team honors while junior James Leow was an honorable mention.

It marks the first time in program history having four first-teamers, and the most being awarded the honor since 1994 when Todd Dempsey and Chris Stutts earned first team honors while Larry Barber, Scott Johnson and Cade Stone earned second-team honors.
It's the third consecutive year that a Sun Devil has won freshman/newcomer of the year, with David Puig winning the award last year. Summerhays joins a special list of Sun Devils to earn freshman of the year, alongside teammate Cameron Sisk (2019), Jon Rahm (2013) and 2003 NCAA Champion Alejandro Canizares (2003). Summerhays has a 71.38 stroke average and a low round of 66 at the Amer Ari Invitational, which includes co-medalist honors at the East Lake Cup.
Next up for the Sun Devil men's program is earning a bid to the 2022 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club as they will travel for NCAA regional action May 16-18.
Summerhays has consistently delivered for the Sun Devils' lineup throughout his rookie season, owning a 71.4 scoring average across 32 rounds. He has played in every ASU competition 2021-22, posting five top-10 finishes in 11 tournaments including a share of medalist honors (4-under 68) at the East Lake Cup in October and a ninth-place showing (1-over 285) at the Pac-12 Championships in Washington. Summerhays joins Alejandro Canizares (2003), Jon Rahm (2013) and teammates Cameron Sisk (2019) and David Puig (2021) to earn the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year honor.

With the team victory and Jon Rahm's title at the 2016 Albuquerque Regional, ASU has won or tied for a NCAA regional title seven times. ASU tied with Arizona in 1991 and tied with New Mexico in 1998. It won the title outright in 1995, 1999, 2001 2009 and 2016. In addition to Rahm's two titles (2015 as well), Sun Devil Paul Casey won a 1998 individual regional title outright followed by Jeff Quinney (1999), Benjamin Alvarado Holley (2007) and then Jesper Kennegard in 2009. Matt Jones shared medalist honors in 2001.
