Beavers Open NCAA Regional Play with Gritty Win Over Ohio State

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – After loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, freshman Sarah Haendiges and Oregon State softball retired three straight to preserve a 4-3 win over Ohio State in in the NCAA Knoxville Regional Friday afternoon at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.  

Madison Simon sent a home run over the right field wall while senior Mariah Mazon pitched six innings giving up seven hits, three runs and struck out three to headline the Beavers victory.

Oregon State (34-19) will face the winner of No. 11 Tennessee/Campell on Saturday, May 21 at 9 a.m. PT.

Oregon State scored a pair in the fourth, all with two outs, breaking the 1-1 tie. Kaylah Nelsen sent a single up the middle, putting the Beavers on first and second. One batter later, Grace Messmer reached on a fielder's choice while a Buckeye error drove home the runners.  

With the bases loaded in the fifth, Mazon drew her second walk of the game for an RBI, which would eventually prove to be the game-winning run.

Haenidges earned a gritty save from the circle after allowing two hits and giving up a walk with no outs in the seventh. The freshman forced an infield fly before striking out the final two Buckeyes to seal her third save of the year.

The winner of the double-elimination NCAA Regional will move on to the best-of-three NCAA Super Regional against the winner of the Tuscaloosa Regional. The Women's College World Series will be played in Oklahoma City, Okla., June 2-9/10.
