Cal Adds Liz Waters-Leiga

May 27, 2022

BERKELEY Cal beach volleyball head coach Meagan Owusu announced the addition of Liz Waters-Leiga to the program on Wednesday.

Waters-Leiga joins after playing three seasons at Florida State where she accumulated a 34-9 record as an individual for the Seminoles. The native of San Leandro, California transfers in with two years of eligibility remaining. She will be pursuing a degree in sociology with a minor in psychology at Cal.

"Liz is a Bay Area native and has been one of the top players in the area for quite some time," Owusu said. "She is physical and versatile and will make an immediate impact on our program."

This past season, Waters-Leiga went 6-4, while recording two wins over NCAA Tournament teams in FAU and Stetson as she played at every spot in the top four of the lineup for a team that took second place at the NCAA Championship. In 2021, she went 15-5 while playing mostly on court four for the Seminoles. Waters-Leiga went 8-5 vs. ranked opponents and collected four wins over top-10 teams, defeating squads from No. 1 LSU, No. 10 TCU, No. 5 UCLA and No. 6 Cal Poly.

As a freshman in 2020, she played in all 13 matches for Florida State as she went undefeated with 12 of those wins coming on court four. Waters-Leiga and her partner, Payton Caffrey, earned seven ranked wins, scoring victories over No. 9 Stetson, No. 7 Cal Poly, No. 10 Grand Canyon and No. 4 USC. Their dominant season saw the pair hold her opponent to 10 or fewer points in a set six times and outscore opponents by an average of 7.6 points per set win. She was named to USA Volleyball's Collegiate Beach Volleyball National Team in 2020 after her freshman campaign.

The Bay Area native and San Leandro HS graduate had a decorated career prior to college as she won the 2018 California Beach Volleyball Association Tour Stop 2 with partner Jordan Polo, who graduated from Cal last year and played her postgraduate season at Florida State. The pair also won the CBVA Tour Stop 9 in Santa Cruz in 2017. Waters-Leiga also took second place in the 18U Gold bracket of the 2017 GNBV Ocean Park Santa Monica event and the 2018 CBVA Cal Cup. In 2015, Waters-Leiga took second place in the AAU Beach Volleyball National Championship for the 14U Division.
