Sun Devil Women’s Tennis Welcomes Two to Program

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Women's Tennis program has announced the addition of two players to the roster ahead of the 2022-23 season in incoming freshman Chelsea Fontenel and transfer Rachel Hanford (Minnesota).

Fontenel, 17, is a Switzerland native who trained throughout her high school years at the heralded IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Having competed at all four Junior Grand Slams, Fontenel has received a career-best ranking of No. 38 in the International Tennis Federation Junior World Rankings.

She's also been ranked by the Women's Tennis Association's as No. 1341 in singles and No. 887 in doubles.

Fontenel has also added a pair of titles in the J4 Frankfurt (2021) and the J5 Bayamón (2019) tournaments.

Hanford joins the Sun Devils after two terrific seasons at the University of Minnesota. Primarily playing at the No. 1 singles position in both her freshman and sophomore campaigns for the Gophers, Hanford has a career-best ranking of No. 70 in the ITA's National Singles Rankings.

The Mississauga, Ontario, native ended the 2022 season ranked as the No. 17 player in the ITA's Central Region. One of two captains for the Gophers this spring, Hanford was a unanimous All-Big Ten Selection, helping Minnesota reach its highest win total since 2003.

Hanford, who will come to ASU as a junior, tallied 11 wins in dual matches this spring, posting a winning record at the No. 1 position. Prior to joining the Gophers, she was a member of the U16 Canadian Fed Cup Team and a finalist at the Canadian Indoor Nationals tournament.

Both Fontenel and Hanford will join a Sun Devil program that is set to return all seven players from this spring's roster.
