Five Finalists On Day Two In Irvine

Destin Lasco was one of two Golden Bears who earned top-eight finishes on Wednesday at the Phillips 66 National Championships.

IRVINE, Calif. – California rising junior Destin Lasco finished fourth in the 200-meter backstroke, pacing a group of five Golden Bears that swam in A- and B-finals of two events on Tuesday at the 2022 Phillips 66 National Championships.
 
Lasco clocked 1:57.76 in the 200m back A-final and was followed by teammates Sebastian Somerset (2:00.34), Colby Mefford (2:00.71) and Ziyad Saleem (2:01.83), who placed 12th, 13th and 14th overall as B-finalists.
 
In the 200m freestyle, graduate transfer Patrick Callan touched the wall in 1:48.49 to take eighth place. Gabriel Jett – who captured the 200m butterfly national title on Tuesday – continued his impressive week with a personal-best 1:47.44 to win the B-final and take ninth; less than two seconds behind him was Trenton Julian, who was 14th overall in 1:49.27.
 
Five Bears swam in the 200m breaststroke, but none advanced to the finals. Jason Louser was Cal's top finisher in the event, placing 25th in 2:15.06.

Focus shifts to the 100m fly and 400m individual medley on Thursday in Irvine. Prelims beginning at 9 a.m. PT and finals at 5 p.m. PT. Finals will be broadcast live on Olympic Channel, while prelims can be streamed on http://www.usaswimming.org/watch. Click here for a full broadcast schedule.
