Three USC Golfers Set For 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur

Junior Brianna Navarrosa, sophomore Amari Avery and freshman Catherine Park will tee off Monday (Aug. 8) in the 2022 U.S. Women's Amateur at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., each looking to become the fifth Trojan to win the coveted USGA trophy.

The 156-woman field will play 36 holes of stroke play Aug. 8-9 with the top 64 finishers advancing to a six-round match play format to decide the champion. Golf Channel will broadcast live coverage of the match play portion Aug. 10-14.

USC has had impressive success in the U.S. Amateur with four champions including Gabriela Ruffels (2019), Jennifer Song (2009), Becky Lucidi (2002) and Jill McGill (1993).

Ruffels almost repeated as champion in 2020, falling in the 36-hole final in the first hole of a playoff. Additionally, two Trojans have earned medalist honors after 36 holes, Heidi Vorhees (1993) and current redshirt freshman Trojan Jiarui (Joyce) Jin (2019),

Avery earned her spot in this year's field by virtue of being on the 2022 Curtis Cup and being among the top 25 points leaders in the Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking. She reached the round of 32 in 2020.

Navarrosa and Park qualified after finishing as co-medalists with a pair of 67s at the Las Posas C.C. qualifier on June 27.

USC fifth-year head coach Justin Silverstein will be on the bag for Avery, as he was during Ruffels' successful run in 2019.

In 2021, sophomore Xin (Cindy) Kou reached the round of 32 while the recently-graduated Alyaa Abdulghany made match play. Senior Malia Nam just missed match play, falling in a multi-player playoff.

Abdulghany made a run to the 2020 semifinals before falling to eventual champion Rose Zhang, who defeated Ruffels. Nam and Allisen Corpuz both reached match play in 2020 as well while current junior Christine Wang played in the event as well. Park reached match play in 2020, falling in the first round in 20 holes.

Corpuz reached the round of 16 in 2019 while current junior Michaela Morard made the round of 32, Nam the round of 64.

Nam also reached the round of 32 in 2015 as a prep sophomore and played in the event as a 2014 freshman.
